PURPOSE:To obtain the objective composition for oral cavity application exhibiting specific antibacterial action against Streptococcus mutans, free from influence upon other normally existing bacteria and effective in preventing the formation of dental plaque and dental caries by using tormentic acid or its salt as an active component. CONSTITUTION:The objective composition contains tormentic acid or its salt which is a pentacyclic acidic triterpene compound existing in nature e.g., in a plant of genus Comanthosphace, family Labiatae, etc. The compound of formula can be used as a composition for oral cavity application by mixing with a proper excipient, adjuvant, etc., and forming into a drug or by adding to conventional food. The preferable form of the composition is dentifrice, gargle, liquid ointment, troche, chewing gum, candy, drink, etc. The concentration of the compound of formula in the composition in use is preferably >=0.005(w/v)%. The composition is especially useful for the prevention of dental caries of infant. |
