PURPOSE:To efficiently and economically obtain the subject compound useful as a synthetic raw material for various physiologically active substances in good yield for a short time by oxidizing hydroxyacetone with an oxygen- containing gas in the presence of a catalyst containing a specific metal in an aqueous solution. CONSTITUTION:Hydroxyacetone as a raw material is oxidized with an oxygencontaining gas in the presence of a catalyst containing cobalt using water a solvent to afford the objective compound. The reaction is carried out at ambient temperature to 150 deg.C, preferably 85-110 deg.C under ordinary pressure to 10kg/cm<2>G pressure. The concentration of the hydroxyacetone in the water solvent is suitably within the range of 0.1-30wt.%, preferably 0.2-10wt.%. The catalyst is used by supporting cobalt metal or an oxide thereof on a carrier. Molybdenum, etc., may be used together in addition to the cobalt. The amount of the catalyst used is preferably within the range of 10-200g based on 1l reaction solution. |
