PURPOSE: To obtain a skin tanning composition capable of imparting a preferable controlled tan to skin by contacting the skin prior to exposure to ultraviolet radiation with the composition substantially free of added enzyme and containing a tanning agent, and further provide a high protection against harmful sun rays to the skin. CONSTITUTION: This skin tanning composition substantially free of added enzyme, containing at least one kind of a tanning agent selected from a melanin precursor such as 5,6-methylenedioxyindole and 5, 6-dihydroxy-N-methylindole, and a melanin precursor analogue and having a lotion or a cream form is applied on the skin prior to exposure to ultraviolet radiation to preferentially generate a color tone in a corneum layer and impart the color tone substantially resembled to a natural tan to the skin by exposing the skin to the ultraviolet radiation for 2-30min and to tighten the skin in the method for tanning the skin. The content of the tanning agent in the composition is 0.1-10wt.%.
