PURPOSE:To brominate a benzene compound in high bromination degree by using a bromination agent composed of bromine and chlorine at a specific molar ratio and introducing the bromine before the introduction of chlorine in such a manner as to get a specific precedence ratio of bromine at a time after the start and before the end of the bromine introduction. CONSTITUTION:A benzene compound is brominated in high bromination degree by using a bromination agent consisting of bromine and chlorine, using the benzene compound, bromine and chlorine in amounts to satisfy the formula 4.5a>=c>=b>=3a (when the benzene compound is unsubstituted compound) or 3.8a>=c>=b>=2.5a (when the benzene compound has alkyl substituent) (a, b and c and molar amounts of the benzene compound, bromine and chlorine, respectively) and introducing the bromine before the introduction of chlorine in such a manner as to get a bromine precedence ratio P defined by the formula I (in the case of unsubstituted benzene compound) or the formula II (in the case of monoalkyl-substituted benzene compound) satisfies the formula 0<=P<=0.5 at a time (t) after the start and before the end of the bromine introduction. The catalyst is preferably Sb (compound). The objective compound having excellent appearance, color tone and heat-resistance can be produced by this process. |
