Method of placing thin-walled metal plates in a trench wall serving as diaphragm wall, in which the metal plates are unwound from a reel and lowered vertically in strips into the supporting liquid or the still plastic sealing compound of the trench wall. Before the metal strips plunge into the trench wall, open seams are formed at the side margins of the metal strips. The seams interlock during the lowering and are later pressed tightly together with a special device. Here, the seams only project on one side of the sealing diaphragm formed by the metal strips and are designed in such a way that the device for pressing together the seams can move up and down on the latter.
