In a method for checking the functioning of the exhaust catalyser (1) of an internal combustion engine, the respective oxygen contents of the exhaust from the internal combustion engine before entry to the exhaust catalyser (1) and after emergence from the exhaust catalyser (1) are measured during constant operating conditions of the internal combustion engine. The difference between the two oxygen contents is furthermore formed. The quotient of this difference between the oxygen contents and the oxygen content of the exhaust before entry to the exhaust catalyser (1) is then formed. Finally, this quotient is then compared with a desired value specific to the particular type of exhaust catalyser to indicate the functional status of the exhaust catalyser (1). <IMAGE>
