<p>Anaerobic breakdown of sludge involves (a) solubilising organic sludge, (b) feeding the dissolved sludge into an anaerobic putrefaction tank in presence of CH4-formers as mainly CH4-forming microflora, present in sewage sludge and multiplying well at pH 7.8-8.5, and (c) carrying out the breakdown at pH 7.8-8.5 with a residence time of at most 5 days, without recycling the degraded sludge into the putrefaction tank. ADVANTAGE - A high deg. of breakdown is reached in a shorter time.</p>
