A display device (16) for motor vehicles comprises a translucent, reflective, rear-lit point matrix LCD (19) capable of graphical representation, the matrix points of which can be controlled electrically by driver stages. The contrast in brightness between the controlled matrix points (22), to which a voltage is applied, and the other, non-controlled matrix points is used to display information (29) on the LCD (19). To obtain maximum contrast but glare-free display of information in light as well as in darkness, a contrast reversal is carried out at the LCD (19). To this end, the driver stages of the controlled and non-controlled matrix points ca be reversed as a function of the brightness in front of the LCD (19).
