The invention relates to a method for purification of waste aqueous medium containing dispersed and dissolved inorganic and organic pollutants, such as dyes, proteins and metal ions, e.g. zinc, copper, iron and manganese ions, using chitosan in purification. The chitosan used is microcrystalline chitosan, especially in a gel-like dispersion form to bind the pollutants, and it is brought into contact with waste either directly in prefabricated state or it is generated in the waste aqueous medium.
