<p>A branched polycarbonate and a process for its production are disclosed. The branched polycarbonate has a branched nucleus structure derived from at least one of α,α',α''-tris(4-hydroxyphenyl)-1,3,5-triisopropylbenzene, 1-[α-methyl-α-(4'-hydroxyphenyl)ethyl]-4-[α',α'-bis(4''-hydroxyphenyl)ethyl]benzene, phloroglucinol and trimellitic acid, has a viscosity-average molecular weight of 15,000 to 40,000, and contains up to 3.5 wt % of acetone-solubles. The process uses as the starting material at least one compound having three or more functional groups, such as those described above, and comprises reacting a mixture of a polycarbonate oligomer prepared by using phosgene with other material(s) in a turbulent flow state and, when the viscosity is increased, reacting them further in a laminar flow state while adding thereto an aqueous alkali solution. The branched polycarbonate has an excellent impact resistance and is suited for blow molding.</p> |
