A process for the preparation of methanol involves contacting a gaseous mixture comprising carbon monoxide and hydrogen with a novel catalytic system formed by combining a) a copper salt, b) an alcohol, and c) a complex hydride, and allowing the combined components to react. The exemplified salt is copper acetate, the hydride is preferably sodium borohydride and the alcohol pentanol or 2, 4, 6 trioxanonane. |
