A circuit breaker having an arc impeller characterized by a circuit breaker mechanism having stationary and movable contacts operable between open and closed positions. A U-shaped member has a U-leg on opposite sides of the stationary contact and the U-shaped member is comprised of a ferromagnetic material for providing a magnetic field in a zone perpendicular to the path of current through the closed contacts so as to drive any arc away from the contacts into an adjacent arc extinguisher. A fiber barrier is located adjacent the stationary contacts, which emits are cooling gas during contact separation.
