An apparatus for manufacturing a light diffusing glass envelope, the apparatus comprises means (2, 12, 16) for forming a glass envelope from a layer (8) of glass at an elevated temperature and means (22) for electrostatically depositing particles of a powder on the internal surface of said glass envelope (20) to form a coating on said internal surface. The means (22) for electrostatically depositing particles is positioned to permit deposition of said particles when said glass envelope (20) is attached to said layer (8).
