A method of manufacturing a light diffusing glass envelope includes the step of producing a glass envelope at an elevated temperature. Particles of a powder are electrostatically deposited onto the internal surface of the glass envelope while it is at this elevated temperature. The particles are formed of an inorganic material that softens at this elevated temperature and so the particles adhere to the internal surface of the glass envelope to form a coating.
