<p>This invention provides methods and compositions for reducing or eliminating undesired dimerization of ketone solvents in magnetic metal particle coating mixes used in the manufacture of magnetic recording media. The dimerization of ketone solvents, such as cyclohexanone, is reduced or eliminated by the use in the magnetic coating mix of an organic compound having two or more functional groups selected from carboxylic acid, sulfonate or phosphonate groups. The preferred organic compounds are difunctional, particularly dicarboxylic acids. The resulting magnetic media have improved properties, reduced solvent retention, and reduced odor.</p> |
