According to the invention, a heater, in particular an additional heater for vehicles, is provided, in which a sound-damping device is built into the heater. In this connection, a sound damper can be provided in the combustion chamber or the combustion chamber itself can be designed as a sound damper. In this connection, the sound damper can damp the combustion noise and/or the combustion gas noises by absorption and/or reflection. The sound damper can moreover also be designed in such a manner that it simultaneously cleans the combustion gases, for example by catalytic post-combustion and/or by filtering out soot particles when the heater is operated with diesel fuel as liquid fuel. As the sound damper is arranged in the hot zone but not in the flame region of the combustion chamber, it is not acted upon directly by the high flame temperatures, but self-cleaning of the sound damper is nevertheless brought about as a result of the relatively high temperatures, so that it can work reliably and efficiently over long periods of operation. In an alternative embodiment, the exhaust gas is silenced in the exhaust gas collecting chamber before exit from the heater, in order to achieve quiet working of such a heater. An otherwise conventional sound damper situated in the exhaust gas line of the heater can also be omitted. For sound damping, sound-insulating material can be arranged in the exhaust gas collecting chamber.
