PURPOSE:To make possible the accurate printing of characters according to their number in a desired area of a medium with a varying width by displacing a medium inserted in a transport path to a specified position and at the same time, measuring the movement upto the position for displacement, calculating the width of the medium based on this movement and calculating a printing area based on the calculated width of the medium. CONSTITUTION:A medium 10 inserted from the insertion port 1 of an external medium is carried to a device for displacement of the side 4 along a transport path 2. As soon as the device 4 begins its action, the step value of a plate for adjustment to the side 43 is measured by a movement measurement device 5. If the step value is smaller than a specified value, the device 5 determines that the action to displace the medium 10 is performed normally, and this determination is checked by a signal from a displacement sensor 46. Thus the action for adjustment to the side is completed. Then an updated step value is transmitted by the movement measurement device 5 to a microprocessor 9, and the width of the medium is calculated by the microprocessor based on the step value. Data on the width of the medium obtained is stored in memory as printing area information. The microprocessor 9 calculates a required printing area in accordance with the number of characters to be printed. If the calculation is appropriate, the microprocessor drives a printing device 8 to perform printing. |
