PURPOSE: To provide a method for sorting wood chips, capable of accurately controlling a pulping process and enhancing the whole capacity of a digester by dividing the flow of the wood chips into four separated flows, independently subjecting the flows to specific treatments and then directing the treated chips to the next process. CONSTITUTION: The wood chips are directed from a conveyer 1 to the feed end 2 of a gyratory screen 3 in a first stage, and the chip flow is divided into four fractions. A first fraction contains mainly oversized chips and is directed to a pin chipper 5, from which it emerges as suitable-sized chips and is directed back to the gyratory screen 3 of the first stage. A second fraction contains acceptable sized chips and most of the overthick chips and is directed to a second or thickness screening stage using a disk screen 4. The overthick chips are directed to the feed funnel 8 of a suction separator 7. The lightweight chips are directed to a slicing machine 12 through a suction pipe 9 and a centrifugal separator 1, converted into smaller chips and then returned to the feed end 2. A third fraction consists mainly of acceptable chips and is directed to a storage portion having a digester or pulper through a conveyer 14. A fourth fraction consists mainly of fine particles and is directed to a burning station through a conveyer 13. The finer fraction passed through the disk screen 4 comprises acceptable chips, and is directed to pulping process.
