The invention relates to a method for preparing silica particles, wherein a solution containing SiF6 ions is brought into contact with NH3 or an NH4OH solution in such a way that a pH of between 7.0 and 9.5 is reached, the silica-containing precipitate is separated from the reaction mixture and washed, resulting in a silica slurry, characterized in that an amount of mechanical energy greater than 1W/kg is added to the reaction mixture and/or the silica slurry, and the silica is then separated from the liquid and dried. The silica thus obtained is readily compactable into particles having high mechanical strength and a large BET surface area.
