The invention relates to a process and an apparatus for aerating longitudinal-flow tanks of biological effluent (waste water) treatment plants and for cross-flow mixing the waste water. It is characteristic for the process that, by the action of dispersed gases on liquid columns which are separated in vertical walls arranged along a longitudinal wall of a tank, distributed over at least 50% of the length of the apparatus, an initially upward-flowing gas-liquid mixture flows horizontally in the direction of the other longitudinal wall. As a result of the intensive cross-flow mixing, economic and efficient biological effluent purification results.
