1. Process for obtaining mercapto alcohols of general formula : see diagramm : EP0274934,P8,F1 containing, more especially, up to 24 carbon atoms, and preferably more than 3 carbon atoms, by the reaction of hydrogen sulphide with corresponding vicinal epoxides of formula : see diagramm : EP0274934,P8,F2 where R1 , R2 , R3 and R4 can denote hydrogen, a halogen, a hydroxy ; a C1 -C22 alkyl, haloalkyl, hydroxyalkyl ; C2 -C22 alkoxyalkyl, alkoxyhaloalkyl or alkylthioalkyl ; alkoxyaryl or alkylthioaryl optionally substituted with one or more alkyl, halogen, hydroxyl or alkoxyl groups or carboxyl groups or aliphatic esters thereof ; a group containing one or more carboxyl groups ; C3 -C22 alkenyl ; C5 -C12 cycloalkyl or cycloalkenyl ; C6 -C18 aryl or haloaryl ; C7 -C19 aralkyl, aryloxyalkyl, arylthioalkyl, alkylaryl, alkylaryloxyalkyl or alkylarylthioalkyl ; and when R1 and R2 are taken together, they can denote a C3 -C10 alkylene, characterized in that the reaction is performed in the presence of a catalyst consisting of guanidine and/or of guanidine derivatives of general formula : see diagramm : EP0274934,P8,F3 in which R5 , R6 , R7 , R8 and R9 can denote hydrogen, a halogen, a C1 -C8 alkyl, C2 -C8 alkenyl, C5 -C12 cycloaliphatic or C6 -C14 aromatic, it being possible for each of these carbon-containing substituents optionally to possess a halogen and/or a functional group, and/or of salts of such guanidines, either in liquid and/or solid form depending on the nature of the catalyst and its solubility the reaction medium, or attached to and/or impregnated into various solid materials.
