Overedge stitch type for sewing a workpiece edge (117) extending parallel to the direction of advance is formed from two needle threads (98,99) and one looper thread (100) and comprises loops (115,116) of the two needle threads that are arranged in the workpiece at a distance from the edge and pass through loops (118) of the looper thread arranged transversely relative to the edge on the needle entry side of the workpiece. The loops of the needle threads on the needle exit side are drawn to the edge of the workpiece where they are interlaced with a following loop of the looper thread which itself extends as far as the following entry points of the needles into the workpiece.
