The valve assembly (10) has a base (12) with an exhaust gas chamber (18) having inlet (14) and outlet (20a) openings. A valve seat (22) surrounds the inlet or outlet. A cover (16) closes the chamber and has an opening (50) aligned with the seal. A movable seal (36) aurro unds the valve stem (30) of a valve member (32) adjacent to the seat. The seal is positioned outside of the chamber. A spring (42) surrounds the stem to bias the seal into engagement with the cover to seal the cover opening (50).
