PURPOSE: To provide an elevator machine with a compact structure by placing a gear assembly inside of a traction sheave, penetrating a drive shaft through the traction sheave, connecting a drive motor with one end of the drive shaft, and mounting a brake to the other end on the opposite side of the traction sheave. CONSTITUTION: An intermediate gear 5 is mounted to the inside of a traction sheave 3 between the inner surface of a pulley rim and a drive shaft 2. When this drive shaft 2 rotates with a motor, the intermediate gear 5 transmits rotational farce to the traction sheave 3, and the traction sheave 3 moves an elevator adhesion rope 4 with frictional force to lift up and down an elevator car 9.
