A process for improving color of thermoplastic polymer (I) by contacting the monomer (s) before polymerization with an alkali or alkaline earth metal formate or mixts. thereof. The (I) is one of polyether imide, polyester, aromatic polycarbonate, poly (ester carbonate), styrene polymer, poly(alkyl acrylate), polyurethane, polyvinyl chloride, poly(arylether), polyester carbonate, copolyester block copolymer and polyhydroxy ether.
