An apparatus is to be created having an extremely long flow path for the liquid to be filtered. The apparatus has a vessel (10) filled with a purifying medium, in the interior of which vessel are arranged a plurality of guide ridges (15, 16) in order to form chambers (11) through which the liquid stream flows. On successively flowing through the chambers (11), the liquid stream is repeatedly diverted, as a result of which a particularly long contact time with the purifying medium is achieved. The apparatus according to the invention is particularly suitable for filtering drinking water used in the home. <IMAGE>
