The invention relates to the stepwise transverse transport of elongate material (28) to be conveyed, for example extruded light metal profile sections, with the aid of vertically and transversely adjustable walking beams (1, 9). While, in the case of the prior art, the material (28) to be conveyed must be raised and lowered during the conveying stroke, the invention proposes, for the purpose of avoiding harmful influences on the material (28) to be conveyed, the use of systems of walking beams (1, 9) which can be moved in a manner periodically offset with respect to each other and which are raised and lowered by means of their pivoting drives (3, 10) in such a manner that the material (28) to be conveyed is always situated on a walking beam system (1, 9) located in the high position and is moved forwards by the latter in the conveying direction (28). For this purpose, the walking beams (1, 9) are guided so as to be capable of being moved back and forth in the conveying direction (28) on their pivoting drives (3, 10). <IMAGE>
