PURPOSE:To produce the subject compound on an industrial scale at a low cost by hydrolyzing chalaza and vitelline membrane of chicken's egg with an acid and separating and purifying the separated sialic acid with an adsorbent. CONSTITUTION:An acid such as sulfuric acid is added to chalaza and vitelline membrane of chicken's egg to adjust the pH to 1.2-2.5 and the mixture is heated at 80-100 deg.C for 30-120min to hydrolyze the chalaza, etc., and separate sialic acid. The hydrolyzed liquid is purified e.g., by filtration, passed through a cation exchange resin to remove foreign matters and passed through an anion exchange resin to effect the adsorption of sialic acid to the anion exchange resin. The adsorbed sialic acid is eluted and recovered by passing formic acid through the resin while continuously increasing the concentration from 0 to 2N. The recovered sialic acid is desalted e.g., by gel-filtration and subjected e.g., to vacuum drying to obtain the objective compound. |
