An apparatus for separating out packaging units, especially bottles, which are recognised to be defective and which are transported on a horizontal path of movement, the bottles to be separated out being moved approximately transversely relative to the direction of movement by a deflecting device which is accommodated in a housing and which is activated at the exact time by a recognition station for packaging units to be separated out and, in the position of rest, has a guide wall projecting into the conveying path in a wedge-shaped manner, and moreover by a deflecting device designed as a tappet movable essentially transversely relative to the path of movement. The technical problem is to design the apparatus in such a way that the bottles are diverted reliably from the first path of movement. The tappet (11) engages on a plate-shaped link (10) pivotable about a pivot axis (journal 9) fixed relative to the housing. The link (10) carries an accelerating head (16). The moment arm (17) of the accelerating head (16) is greater perpendicularly to the direction of movement of the tappet (11) than the moment arm (18) of the tappet (11) itself, in each case in relation to the journal (9). The pivot axis (9) of the link (10) is set back relative to the accelerating head (16) in the direction of movement of the tappet (11), so that, when the tappet is actuated, the accelerating head is accelerated with a component in the direction of movement of the path of movement (1). <IMAGE>
