The ignition system comprises a high-voltage ignition circuit (1) to which at least one spark plug (13) is connected via a connection line (29) which is enclosed at least in certain sections by an insulating sleeve (27). Two sections of the connection line (29) which lie one next to the other and are enclosed by the insulating sleeve (27) are enclosed by external conductor sections (23, 25) which are D.C. insulated from one another and form together with the external conductor sections (23, 25) coaxial line sections (17, 19) which are capacitively connected to one another via the external conductor sections (23, 25). With the aid of an ignition system of this kind, ignition voltage oscillations which lie far above radio frequencies, for example in the giga hertz range, can be excited, which oscillations considerably increase the number of ignition breakdowns and thus the ignition energy which becomes effective.
