A latch needle has a shank, a hook (3) formed at the front end of the shank and a latch which is fastened to the shank in an articulated manner, the front end of which is designed as a spoon (6). The spoon (6) is designed in such a way that it can come to bear on the upper surface of the hook (3). As seen in cross-section, the height (H) of the hook (3) is greater than its width (L) in the lower region (7), and the width (1) in the region of its upper surface (8) is smaller than the width (L) in the lower region. The radius of curvature of the upper surface (8) of the hook (3) is smaller than the radius of curvature of the underside (10) of the spoon (6). This design guarantees an exact positioning of the latch in relation to the hook, so that the occurrence of knitting errors is avoided. <IMAGE>
