PURPOSE:To obtain the subject carbon fiber having high oxidation resistance and efficiently coated with a thin and uniform thermally decomposed carbon film having high graphitization degree by passing methane diluted with an inert gas on the surface of a carbon fiber and carrying out the thermal decomposition of methane. CONSTITUTION:Methane diluted with an inert gas is passed on the surface of a carbon fiber and, at the same time, thermally decomposed at 900-1100 deg.C to deposit a thin and uniform film of thermally decomposed carbon on the surface of the carbon fiber in situ and obtain the objective fiber coated with thermally decomposed carbon film. Methane is diluted with an inert gas at a concentration of preferably 0.1-30vol.%. The diluted methane is passed on the surface of the carbon fiber e.g., by winding the fiber around a porous bobbin and placing the bobbin in a reaction tube. |
