A swirl chamber (11) is defined by an approximately spherical cavity formed in a cylinder head of an internal combustion engine with the radius ( l ) of the swirl chamber (11) being reduced in the direction the swirl flows in the swirl chamber (11). Therefore, the swirl is accelerated as it flows in the swirl chamber (11). The swirl chamber (11) communicates with a main combustion chamber (2) formed in a piston top via a passage (12) formed in the cylinder head (36) when the piston (1) is at the top dead center and air in the main combustion chamber (2) is forced into the swirl chamber (11) due to the compression movement of the piston (1). The passage (12) is formed in a manner such that it has a constant transverse section and a part of the passage (12) defines a tangental line of the swirl chamber (11). Therefore, air forced into the the swirl chamber (11) passes through the passage (12) with little friction loss, smoothly enters the swirl chamber (11), and gains velocity in the swirl chamber (11).
|
