The fluids which are produced on board ships and which contain mineral oil residues are collected in two separate containers 7, 8, the heavy oil and diesel oils which are difficult to separate being collected in the first container 7, and the lubricating oil which is easy to separate, together with the water produced during the processing of the oils, being collected in the second container 8. The contents of the two containers are then subjected to separate centrifugal treatment at 18 and further treatment at separator 24 or 25. The process substantially reduces the volume of oil sludge containing heavy oils and diesel oils which are difficult to separate.
