Meta-brominated biphenols (I) contg. at least two meta bromines are prepared by contact-reacting a brominating agent (pref. Br2) with a biphenol with all its ortho positions blocked pref. with the same moiety, at 0-100oC. Cds. (I) are useful as intermediates in the formation of flame retardant polymers and monomers.
