PURPOSE:To improve the toughness and strength of the subject composite at a high temperature by calcining the composite in the presence of a solid carbon under a nitrogen partial pressure higher than the nitrogen partial pressure of a system containing SiC and sialon or Si2ON2 solid solution in equilibrium state. CONSTITUTION:The objective ceramics-ceramics composite composed of 1-30wt.% of carbon whisker or chopped fiber and the remaining part of a sialon of formula Si6-zAlzOzN8-z or a solid solution of the sialon and Si2ON2 is produced by mixing 1-30wt.% of carbon whisker or chopped fiber having a diameter of 0.05-15mum and an aspect ratio of 3-800 with Si3N4 powder, Al2O3 powder and AlN powder and calcining the mixture at 1450-2050 deg.C while keeping the nitrogen partial pressure in the furnace to be higher than the nitrogen partial pressure of a system containing SiC and sialon or Si2ON2 solid solution in equilibrium state. |
