PURPOSE:To adjust contrast by adjusting light nonemission brightness while holding light emission brightness high by shifting erasure pulses with write pulses and applying a specific number of maintenance pulses within the time between a write pulse and an erasure pulse. CONSTITUTION:The write pulse is applied to a certain Y electrode to make all discharge cells 14 on the Y electrode emit light temporarily, and then an optional number of maintenance pulses PS are applied to all electrodes 8 and 13 on the entire surface of the plasma display panel PDP 7. All the discharge cells 14 on the Y electrode applied with the write pulse PS by the application of the maintenance pulses PS keep on emitting light with high brightness. This operation is repeated for each electrode as many times as the number of all Y electrodes and an erasure pulse PE for image formation is applied to unselected discharge cells after the maintenance pulses PS are applied. Consequently, the contrast can be adjusted optionally without decreasing the light emission brightness. |
