The present invention relates to an item of furniture of modular and add-on type, consisting essentially of linking pieces 1 and of shelves 2. Item of furniture characterised in that each linking piece 1 has an octagonal cross-section and includes on each face a mortice 3 or a tenon 4 in the longitudinal direction which interact, respectively, with a tenon 4 or a mortice 3 located at each of the two lateral ends of each shelf 2, so as to give the said item of furniture a modular and add-on character. <IMAGE>
