The device comprises a filtering cartridge 3 which recovers the petrol vapours formed in the tank 1. A circuit 2, 9, 11, 10 makes it possible to connect the cartridge to the inlet pipe 8 of an internal combustion engine providing the propulsion of the vehicle. According to the invention, the correct operation of the circuit is checked by connecting to the tank a pressure sensor 13, during a bleed phase. The sensor 13 is normally used for measuring the intake pressure of the engine. A depression in the tank in the bleed phase signifies the absence of leaks in the circuit. Application to a motor vehicle propelled by an internal combustion engine equipped with an intake pressure sensor. <IMAGE>
