An automatic extension device for osteosynthesis has two support units which include a support and rods fixed therein and a drive connected kinematically with the ratchet mechanisms which include a cog wheel and a spring- loaded pawl. The drive and the ratchet mechanisms are mounted on a frame located between the support units and connected with them, and at least one of the support units is connected with the frame and is given relative movement by means of threaded extension bars, which are rigidly fixed in a coaxial relationship with the cog wheels and which take the nuts mounted on the respective support unit. <IMAGE>
