<p>PURPOSE:To improve bistability having a uniform memory effect and uniform orientability by forming the display element in such a manner that org. high-polymer films are films of a crystalline high polymer, only the molecules of the crystalline region are uniaxially oriented and the orientation of the molecules in the amorphous region is random. CONSTITUTION:The liquid crystal display element has the cell structure which is formed with the org. high-polymer films 3, 4 subjected to a uniaxial orientation treatment on one of the inside surfaces and is sealed with a ferroelectric liquid crystal 7 between two sheets of substrates 1 and 9 at least one sheet of which is transparent. This element is formed to have such constitution in which the org. high-polymer films 3, 4 are the films of the crystalline high polymer, only the molecules of the crystalline region are uniaxially oriented and the orientation of the molecules in the amorphous region is random. The uniaxial orientation of the liquid crystal 7 is by the interaction with the crystalline regions of oriented films 3, 4 and the amorphous region has no power to uniaxially orient the liquid crystal 7 and are, therefore, weak in the power to regulate the orientation bearing. The element is consequently large in tilt angle at the time when an electric field is not impressed thereto. The tilt angle thereof at the time of electric field intensity is likewise large. The bistable memory characteristic and the uniformity of the display with decreased orientation defects are improved in this way.</p> |
