In a first measuring process, the measured signal of a first transmitter (SE1) is measured in a first measuring receiver (EM1) at the output of an optical medium (OM). In a second measuring process, the measured signal of a second measuring transmitter (SE2) is measured in the opposite direction in a second measuring receiver (EM2) on the other side of the optical medium (OM). In a third measuring process, the measured signal of the first measuring transmitter is measured again before the optical medium by means of the second measuring receiver (EM2) and in a fourth measuring process, the measured signal of the second measuring transmitter (SE2) is measured in the first measuring receiver (EM1). The exact attenuation of the optical medium may be determined from the four measured values thus obtained. <IMAGE>
