The drive motors required to drive the cutting drums of a shearer loader largely determine the dimensions of the body of such a machine. On account of the confined space conditions underground and for reasons of better discharge of the excavated material, there are strict limits to the size of the machine body, which do not permit the arrangement of more powerful drive motors. It is proposed to provide reduction gearing (32) inside the cutting drum (3). The reduction gearing (32) is connected on the one side to an additional drive motor (18) arranged concentrically to the cutting drum axis (15) and on the other side to the gear train (11) of a supporting arm (9). Gearing (32) of this type enables the cutting drum (3) to be operated with two drive motors (10, 18) of smaller dimensions and lower power rating, of which one is arranged inside the cutting drum (3) and the other is arranged outside the machine body on the supporting arm (9) of the cutting drum (3). <IMAGE>
