In a process for the pyrolysis of organic wastes, the raw material is charged (1) via a predryer (3), which is as a rule charged batchwise and is heated by the exhaust gases (4) of a thermal engine (15), dried and introduced from the latter into the tower (6.1), usually aligned vertically, of a pyrolyser (6). In the latter, the material (1.1) is deflected into essentially horizontally extending layers of uniform height, width and length and transferred into the adjoining heatable pyrolysis chamber (6.2) while the outlet device (8) is closed and, after uniform filling of the material (1.1) introduced, the inlet device (7) is closed. The heating is effected by electrical heating resistors (16) which are supplied by the current produced by the generator part of the thermal engine (15). <IMAGE>
