Airbag safety system

In order to retain the protection provided by an airbag system in a motor vehicle even after a first crash in order to cope with any subsequent impacts which may occur, an airbag (5) which is known per se contains at least one further (inner) airbag (6), the airbag (5, 6) being simultaneously inflated by means of a gas generator (2). Whereas the outflow of the outer airbag (5) (normally via apertures 8) is to remain as "soft" as ever, i.e. the gas is to be pressed out of the airbag in about 100 ms in the event of an accident, the outflow of gas out of the inner airbag (6) is to last about 10 s. The height of the inner airbag (5) is preferably to be such that the inflated inner airbag (6) still makes it possible to look through the windscreen. <IMAGE>
