In the case of a method and/or a device for filling containers (especially bottles) with a liquid material, the container in question is filled via an open liquid valve and a filling pipe which is at a relatively short distance from the container floor in at least part of a first phase of the filling process and is arranged at a relatively large distance from the container floor in a second phase of the filling process, after which the filling pipe is removed from the container when the liquid valve is closed. In order to achieve clean, non-drip filling in particular at a high output, this filling pipe is not emptied either when the distance between the filling pipe and the floor of the container is increased or before or during removal of the filling pipe from the container, the column of liquid formed by the liquid filling material being retained in the filling pipe.
