In the layered-bale press, layers of the crop are pressed continuously in the prechamber 13 of the bale channel 14 and are pushed further by the piston 16. During this operation, crop continues to flow in by way of the pressing channel 12 and presses onto the piston 16. In order to prevent this, the stripper 11 is drawn out of the region of the tines 7 during the advance of the piston 16. As a result, the inflow of crop into the pressing channel is forestalled, and the material is taken up by the tines 7: the non-loaded part of the tine rotor 6 serves as a storage zone. During the return movement of the piston 16, the stripper 11 is introduced again and consequently the crop stream is guided into the pressing channel 10. <IMAGE>
