The invention relates to a method for the filtration of waste water treated in sewage treatment plants and an apparatus for carrying out the method. The waste water is first fed to a filter through which flow passes upwards and the waste water then flows through a filter through which flow passes downwards. In the filter through which flow passes upwards, air is constantly fed to the water flowing through. This filter is designed as a flooded fixed-bed reactor. Complete nitrification and elimination of suspended matter proceed. Phosphate precipitation can be carried out. The filters are cleaned by backwashing with a mixture of clean water and air.
