The invention relates to an apparatus for separating off solids from liquids, in particular from cooling water. The apparatus comprises a rotationally symmetrical screen 1 and a suction apparatus 4 arranged on the intake side and a scraper 5 arranged on the outlet side, to clean the screen 1, the shut-off valve 8 being opened and the drive 3 setting in rotation the suction apparatus 4 and scraper 5. The resulting vacuum in the dirt discharge tube 7 effects a backwashing of the screen 1 at the suction slot 9. For most types of fouling, this backwashing is sufficient, but not for fibrous fouling which in many cases leads to entangling on the outlet side of the screen 1. In these cases, the scraper 5 has the task of scraping off or shearing off the fibrous fouling, the detached fouling being taken up by the backwash and extracted by the suction apparatus 4. <IMAGE>
