The invention relates to a cutting tool with a tool carrier (tool carrier plate 1) and a clamping recess (2), made at the front end of the tool carrier, for the self-clamping retention of a cutting insert (3, 3'). At its inner end, the clamping recess (2) is widened to form an aperture (10) defined in a circular arc shape, in which a circular-sector-shaped, essentially two-legged retaining segment (11) is rotatably mounted. Its leg surfaces forming the sector cut-out (15) can be brought to bear against the inner end region of the top retaining-profile surface (6) situated to the side of the rake face (13) of the cutting insert (3, 3') or against the rear end face (18), remote from the cutting edge (12), of the cutting insert (3, 3'). With its above-mentioned rear bearing regions, the cutting insert (3, 3') rests frictionally and free of play in the sector cut-out (15) of the retaining segment (11) in such a way that the leg surface of the retaining segment (11) acting on the rear end face (18) of the cutting insert (3, 3') forms as stop leg surface (16) a defined end stop for the push-in movement of the cutting insert (3, 3') into the clamping recess (2), and that the leg surface of the retaining segment (11) acting on the top retaining profile surface (6) of the cutting insert (3, 3') ... as clamping leg surface (17) the cutting insert (3, 3') in its defined end stop position as a function of the ... in push-in direction ...
